On Friday 18 February 2022, there will be a premiere in Tromsø of Karin Rehnqvist’s work Songs between light and darkness.

It is composed for soprano, two reciters, alto saxophone, clarinet and piano. The piece is sung in Swedish and recited in Sami.

Here, Karin has chosen texts by two Swedish poets, Gunnar Ekelöf and Sandro Key-Åberg, and also added her own poem, The Moon Soars Quietly in the Night, for the second movement in the three-movement piece.

This is how beautiful the text in Sami is in the translation by Mirja Päiviö:

Mánnu jorrá jaskadit ijás,

nástealbmi šearrádit báita,

báitá bajábeal eatnamiid ja čáziid,

báita munno bajábeal.

The moon floats silently in the night,

the clear sky is shimmering with stars,

shimmering over hill and water,

shimmering over you and me.
