“Kast” – a word which has several meanings in Swedish – means here ‘sharp contrasts”, “abrupt changes”, and is in itself an accurate description of the piece. Since the first and second violins are seated opposite each other it is also possible to ‘cast” the sounds stereophonically between the groups. The work is written in one block, with big leaps and a lighter character in the first movement and with smaller intervals and a darker character in the second movement.
