…and so the day ends
For saxophone quartet
Duration: ca. 5 min
A slow-spun melody. A carefully devised bordun. Chromatic strings of notes that fall and rise. These are the elements of this evensong.
The quartet of saxophones — one alto, two tenors, and one baritone — makes a dark sound. I wanted to bring out the ability of the saxophones to steal near-soundlessly into and out of each other’s notes. I was looking for a sense of breathlessness and suggestion.
…and so the day ends was written for the Stockholm Saxophone Quartet.
Our collaboration through the years has been hugely creative and rewarding.
Woven into the music is the last movement of Sun Song.
